Trustees Nominate An Emerging Leader

        The American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) solicited from each of the 23 AOA practice affiliates one nominee for the 2008 Wyeth Emerging Leader Award. This award was established to recognize and honor outstanding osteopathic physicians who exhibit the exemplary characteristics of a future leader within the profession.  Nominees shall exhibit the following characteristics/skills: demonstrates commitment to osteopathic philosophy and the profession, strong leadership skills, noteworthy accomplishments demonstrating his/her role as a future leader, outstanding character and the drive to be a leader. The goal of this award is to promote continued leadership within the osteopathic medical profession. Through a generous grant from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, the AOF will select two winners to receive a $3,000 award during the AOF’s Honors Ceremony at the AOA’s UNIFIED Convention and Scientific Seminar in Orlando.
The AAO Board of Trustees selected Lori A. Dillard, DO as the Academy’s nominee for the 2008 award and is confident that the AOF’s award committee will agree that she exceeds the eligibility criteria for this award. Dr. Dillard has a deep passion for the osteopathic medical profession and her commitment to osteopathic principles and practice is particularly strong in the critical educational arena. Her skills are evidenced by these primary leadership roles:
·      Chairperson – Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center’s Osteopathic Principles and Methods Committee;
·      Advisor – AAO’s Postgraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (the special intern/resident membership section);
·      Chairperson, Resident In-service Examination Committee of the AAO’s Postdoctoral Standards and Evaluation Committee (responsible for administration of annual written and practical examinations)
·      Lead Program Director – Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Residency Directors Committee for Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine;
·      Clinical Assistant Professor – MSU-COM Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine; and
·      Director of the NMM/OMM residency at Mount Clemens (after being approved, the hospital restructured and withdrew funding before the program started).
In addition to her educational endeavors, Dr. Dillard has participated in two important research projects, perhaps an indicator of a future dual career in research and education. Most recently, she served as the site co-principal investigator and lead OMM specialist in the Multi-Center Osteopathic Study in the Elderly (MOPSE) under the direction of Donald Noll, DO, FACOI of Kirksville. While she was a resident, she participated in a pilot study on the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment following coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Should the AOF select Dr. Dillard for this recognition, she would join four other AAO members who have been so honored over the six-year history of this award – Michael S. Carnes, DO in 2002; Douglas J. Jorgensen, DO in 2003; Sonia Rivera-Martinez, DO in 2004; and Kendi Hensel, DO in 2005.

Three Receive HLM Award
The AAO Board of Governors selected three members to receive the Academy’s  Honorary Life Membership Award, the maximum permitted by the AAO Bylaws. The 2008 recipients are Andrew Berry, DO; Laurence Bouchard, DO; and Isabelle A. Chapello, DO, FAAO. The Governors may select recipients who have exhibited outstanding service to the osteopathic profession in any two of the following categories: (a) contribution to osteopathic literature; (b) development or teaching of osteopathic principles and practice; (c) service in osteopathic health care in the community; and (d) service in the fields of osteopathic education. Governors also may consider active members who have been in practice 50 years and have been members of the Academy for 25 consecutive years.

Dr. Bouchard has an exemplary leadership record within the osteopathic medical profession, the pinnacle being his term as American Osteopathic Association President in 1993-1994. AOA Delegates elected him to the office of AOA 3rd Vice President in 1992 and looked to him for strong representation of the profession’s small states. During his Presidential term he pushed for “unity” as the profession moved into its second century of existence. Dr. Bouchard was 1968-1969 President of the Rhode Island Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons and served as Secretary of the RI Board of Examiners in Osteopathy from 1977-1985. He also was a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and previously served as UNECOM regional dean of clinical affairs. She has maintained a general practice of osteopathic medicine in Luna Pier, Michigan since 1956 and earned her certification in general practice in 1976. She later earned her certification and Fellowship in the American Academy of Osteopathy in 1979 and was an inaugural, two term member and Secretary of the American Osteopathic Board of Special Proficiency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine from 1990-1996. Dr. Chapello has been an active political leader in Michigan, serving in her state association’s House of Delegates for many years and representing her state at the AOA House of Delegates for 17 years. She served on the AAO Board of Governors for many years and formerly was a Trustee of The Cranial Academy. Her exemplary community service includes appointment as Monroe County’s first Chief Deputy Medical Examiner, a position she held for 28 years. Among her many awards was the Academy’s A. T. Still Medallion of Honor in 1999 and President’s Award from the National Osteopathic Women Professionals Association.
